so. . . nobody has posted anything in quite a while. i was wondering if the reunion took place - if so, i'm sure we'd all like to see pictures!
also, i'm interested to see if anybody worked in a med/surg type of setting for a good number of years and then went to the icu? i know a few of you started there right after graduation, and i wish i had. but now i feel like i am stuck in the med/surg rut - and i'm not liking it. i would love to try something different, like icu or even er, but feel like i haven't studied that stuff in over 5 years and would be completely clueless. not like i'd be doing any changes any time soon seeing as my baby is due in 6 weeks. but still, eventually i would like some change in regards to nursing. any thoughts????
thanks!

I worked in a telemetry unit, which may be a good place for you to start if you are intimidated by a full blown ICU...it was a step down unit so we dealt with some of the things and got good practice with rhythms and stuff like that. Occasionally I would get pulled so I got a little taste of ICU and I think if I had wanted it would have been easier to jump into it after this experience. I guess I'm thinking maybe it would work to kind of transition yourself although I'm sure you could make the jump without! :) good luck with your baby!!
that is probably a good idea - working in tele would get me used to looking at monitors again. :) thanks for the suggestion!
p.s. i just checked out your blog - dang it all looks SO good! i'm quite impressed with your baking skills - opening up a bakery with your sister would be so fun! maybe someday?
i'll be checking your blog often - and hopefully cooking up some tasty treats - thanks!
Emily,
I went into the PICU after school and loved it! You know most ICU's have some sort of education system in place so you aren't jumping into something that you are uncomfortable with. And believe it or not I'm sure you'll fall back into it pretty easily. Have you ever thought about ER? ER has the same exciting pace as ICU except you don't have to deal with the same patients day after day and then watch them die. My vote is always for ICU I love everything about it but it is hard for some people and ER seems to fit those nurses well. If you understand what I'm saying...
Emily, make a change if you are craving it; didn't we go into nursing for the flexibility? I agree that any unit you switch to you will get plenty of education and a mentor and stuff. Since graduating I've done ICU, Tele, and ER at 5 different hospitals and you always learn the ropes! Good luck with the switch and your new baby!
